Theatre Program
"What better way to
start out in a career that involves so much than to start at
a place that’s very nurturing – that has a small class size,
and that has instructors that actually care about their students
… if you start out in a smaller place like this, you do build
that confidence. I believe that LCC was the best starting off point that I could
have asked for."
-Sarah McComber, former LCC student
Where the Stage is the Classroom
To step out on stage in character, in
costume, in front of an audience, is a risk – and offers a reward
– unlike any other human endeavor. The Theatre Program at Lansing
Community College is dedicated to nourishing these aspirations
and providing these experiences for our students.
Offering an Associate in Applied Arts
degree in Theatre, students study acting for four semesters
at Lansing Community College. They are then encouraged to transfer
to a four-year college or university to continue their training.
LCC’s theatre curriculum is known as “The Studio Program.” It
offers training in Characterization, Voice, Movement, Improvisation,
Script Analysis, and Shakespeare.

LCC Theatre Performs at Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival
Lansing Community College’s theatre
program performed at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre
Festival (KCACTF) Region III conference at Illinois State University
in Normal, Illinois during the week of January 16, 2006. Region
III includes Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
Only one school from each state was invited to present a scene
during the conference’s opening program. LCC was Michigan’s
representative, performing for an enthusiastic audience of some
500 theatre professionals, faculty and students.
The scene performed was from Six
Degrees of Separation, LCC Theatre’s spring 2005 mainstage
production, directed by Andy Callis. It featured Sineh Wurie
as Paul, a young man pretending to be Sidney Poitier’s son,
and Jessica Bays as Ouisa Kittredge, the wealthy art dealer
taken by Paul’s charm and intellect.
For the past 38 years, the KCACTF
has recognized the best in collegiate theatre – acting, directing,
playwrighting, and design. Colleges and universities submit
productions for inclusion in the regional festivals where they
are presented to attendees who also attend workshops, seminars,
and a design/tech expo. Shows may be submitted as “participating”
or “associate.” A dozen participating shows are selected within
each region and then travel for full production to one of eight
regional conferences around the country in January and February.
The best production from each region then goes to the Kennedy
Center in Washington, D.C. Presenters of associate shows may
be invited to perform a scene of their choice at the regional
conference. A total of 239 associate shows were submitted.
