Alternative Energy Course Descriptions

AEET 102 Principles of Alternative/Renewable Energies

Covers the basic principles and history of alternative energy sources; current industry and government status of geothermal, wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells and other energy sources; and evolving alternative energy career areas will be discussed.

AEET 120 Residential Energy

The Residential Energy course is based upon a broad building science curriculum. It presents a solid scientific foundation upon which inspectors and auditors can build an accurate understanding of modern buildings. Each topic includes an overview of the Technologies, examples of typical installations and their defects, procedures for performing audits, and guidelines for analyzing potential retrofits. A balanced approach to building performance is presented here that addresses energy efficiency, building durability, and human health. The information presented covers the topic areas included in the BPI Building Certification Model, the RESNET Home Energy Rating Standards, and the WAP Core Competencies.

AEET 215 Geothermal Technologies

Covers the basics of geothermal energy production; demonstrates how to utilize and integrate geothermal Technologies as an energy source with a review of residential and commercial applications. (Note: LCC's West Campus is heated and cooled by a geothermal system)

AEET 216 Solar Energy Technologies

Students will analyze a site or location and evaluate it for solar applications and be able to describe passive heating and cooling building designs, a solar water heating system, a solar cooking device, a solar energy efficiency model,  diagram a solar thermal system, analyze solar manufacturing issues including equipment evaluation and types of collectors and filters, create a cost analysis for a solar powered project; and complete a solar energy project.

AEET 217 Bio-Energy

Students in this course will identify biomass fuel sources (organic matter); describe biomass technologies, applications and efficiency; analyze biomass manufacturing, distribution and integration issues; evaluate biogas and its sources and site location; design a biomass system and its related components.

AEET 218 Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies

This course will focus on fuel cell conversion devices and other hydrogen based technologies including "hands-on" experiments. The history of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, their application, instrumentation, specifications, system designs and materials will be covered. Basic thermodynamics and heat/mass transfer Technologies will be discussed. Specific licensing, permits, and safety issues will also be covered.

AEET 219 Wind Energies

In AEET 219 students will learn how to analyze a site or location for history, geography, resources and restrictions; discuss wind-power materials Technologies; demonstrate wind-power energy efficiency; analyze wind-power distribution, manufacturing and systems integration issues. Students in the 2007 Spring Semester erected an 1800 watt windturbine on a 80 ft. tower. Students will design and construct a wind energy project and monitor the LCC windturbine performance using wind measurement instruments. Students will build working table-top miniature models.

AEET 250 Alternative Energy Analysis I

This course will analyze current energy systems, their applications and status.  The process will include project recommendations based on the site, structures and both existing and proposed features.  Analysis will be project-based and require cost comparison of various energy solutions, and calculations involving system comparisons will be performed.

AEET 255 Alternative Energy Analysis II

Students in this course will analyze current energy management systems and technologies for the most efficient energy usage in terms of site geography, topography, availability of energy and resources.  Site design features will include energy efficiency and management concerns.  The Energy Star Program guidelines from the U.S. Department of Energy for energy efficient solutions will be covered as will the U.S. Green Building Councils LEED program.

AEET 260 Codes, Regulations and Standards

This course will cover the codes, regulations, and industry standards that are currently in place for sustainable energy buildings and Green Buildings in Michigan.  Evaluation of a building style and the energy efficient materials used in its construction and their relationship between the codes, regulations, and standards will be included.
