Classroom observations are often accompanied by anxiety for both the observer and the observed. During this interactive session, participants will explore how classroom observations can be used to facilitate collegial discussions, enhance the classroom culture, and promote professional growth and development. While this session is intended for faculty and staff responsible for classroom observations, it would also benefit anyone in a mentoring role and/or responsible for giving students feedback on presentations. This session will focus on facilitating effective communication when giving and receiving feedback. Details on the performance review process are available through Human Resources.

Are you confused about "Obamacare"? Not certain how to separate the fear tactics from the reality? The Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") is a complex law that affects all Americans in many ways, some of which don't get much attention. The facilitator will explain the numerous, more significant provisions of the law, the logic behind it, and evaluate the early actual impact the law is having.

In this session, we will be exploring the advantage of supplementing online courses using online synchronous learning. Students who were previously unable to attend traditional classes because of time constraints, personal responsibilities, or distance from campus can now access their course via online instruction and still meet live with their instructor. Participants will learn how to set up and manage online office hours using Skype or Adobe connect.

Ever wondered how your fellow instructors manage to retain nearly all of their students every semester? Come and hear a faculty panel share what works for them. The panel is comprised of teachers from various disciplines—including both face-to-face and online teaching—who have demonstrated high student retention and success rates. They will discuss the techniques and strategies that keep students in class and working toward that goal of completion. We’ll conclude with a time for questions and participant sharing.

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are freely available online for everyone to use. With the skyrocketing cost of textbooks and other educational materials, OERs are a proven way to minimize or even eliminate these expenses so students can focus more on learning. Faculty may benefit by adopting OERs since it allows them to go beyond the traditional textbook, which in turn encourages pedagogical innovation and creativity.
This workshop will discuss the current OER landscape including finding and evaluating OERs, tips on how you can use OER in your classroom, and successful implementation of OERs at LCC and in other community colleges and universities.

Eli is a peer learning software-as-pedagogy platform invented at MSU and adopted there (institution wide) and at colleges and high schools nationally. The software is grounded in a substantial body of learning and writing research (e.g., Hattie and Timperley, 2007). Eli provides an intuitive platform that allows learners to experience the write-review-revise-improve cycle. Additionally, Eli helps teachers focus their attention to where it is most needed in instruction, and additionally allows instantaneous access to analytics that provide a snapshot of student engagement and writing performance at the individual, task, class, and institutional levels. Eli can be adopted in any discipline or in any class where student-to-student interaction might be helpful. In this presentation, we share our experiences using Eli to improve student learning, engagement, and interaction.

This session will explain how instructors can help students create a collection of their college work using free ePortfolios. Students can use these online portfolios during their entire time at LCC as well as their next school or future career.

This workshop will present various perspectives on student research gleaned from surveys within the LCC community as well as national scholarship. A panel and participant discussion will focus on challenges that students face with research and how faculty can help students become more confident researchers.
Intelligent Agents and Release Conditions are great tools within Desire2Learn that provide endless possibilities for instructors to customize the teaching and learning experience. Intelligent Agents can be used to monitor activity and trigger emails to the instructor and/or student when certain conditions are met or not met. For example, an Agent can notify students when they have not logged in after a set number of days. The message can even be personalized for each student. Release Conditions, on the other hand, allow instructors to hide content until specified conditions are met such as not allowing a student to take a quiz until a Dropbox item has been submitted. Participants are expected to easily navigate within Desire2Learn without facilitator assistance.

Participants will practice installing and setting up Respondus, uploading quizzes to Desire2Learn, and importing existing quizzes from text documents. This workshop is most appropriate for the intermediate to advanced user. Previous experience writing quizzes in Desire2Learn is strongly recommended.

Short video clips can be an effective way to visually introduce a topic and grab the learner’s attention. Animoto is a cloud-based tool that allows the user to create short video clips. You supply the pictures, video clips, and text. Animoto makes the video clip.

Room 040 in the Technology & Learning Center (TLC) building has been retrofitted to be the testing ground for cutting edge teaching and learning technology. This session will introduce the new technology and the varied uses of the room, many of which are already being used by faculty. The facilitators will also encourage faculty members to consider additional uses for the "sandbox."
Most people are unaware that Word and PowerPoint have a very powerful graphics editor built right into the program. Come and explore some of the basic tips and tricks that can make adding simple graphics to a document or presentation easy.

A recent study found that college professors were more likely to respond to prospective student emails if the names given seemed to belong to Caucasian males. Female students and minorities received much lower response rates. Read the study for yourself, then join us for a discussion as we explore our own biases that can affect how we teach and respond to students. Bring your lunch and prepare for a lively discussion about how we can recognize and overcome our own biases.

Tired of watching words slowly rise on the screen in PowerPoint? Are your PowerPoint presentations regulated by the FDA as a powerful narcotic? With the newest versions of PowerPoint, anything that can be placed in a slide can be animated with little effort, adding greatly to the visual impact of a presentation. The facilitator will illustrate a basic animation method and participants will practice some techniques to simulate various multistep processes. It is recommended that this session be preceded by the "Learning to Use Graphics in Word and PowerPoint" workshop.
Instructors can create Checklists in their courses with organized categories and items that describe each task a student needs to complete for that unit. These checklists can be added as topics in Content allowing students to check off each task as they complete them. By using Checklists, instructors are able to increase engagement with course content by clearly outlining expectations for tasks in a specific unit. Participants are expected to easily navigate within Desire2Learn without facilitator assistance.

You'll leave this workshop with several new widgets in your library and the tools to make more of your own.
This workshop will focus on three guiding principles for managing learning in a hybrid or blended format class. We will share examples of how each principle is applied in a real course. Participants will then spend time discussing how they already apply those principles or how they could implement them into their own hybrid-learning environment.
It is always a good idea, at the end of the semester, to archive changes made to a D2L course site in a Master Course or as a copy on a CD ROM. Not sure how to do either? Come to the CTE during one of these drop-in sessions for assistance.
