Exam Feedback Questionnaire

A brief questionnaire attached to the end of an exam gives both instructors and students valuable feedback. Instructors gain a better understanding of how students are preparing for an exam, and they get information for making future exams more effective in terms of assessing student learning. Conversely, students share their perception of the exam and reflect on their role in the exam process, which, in itself, is a learning experience.

To act on this teaching tip, develop two to five questions, such as the following, prior to administering a significant exam:

  • How well did the test questions reflect the course content and what was emphasized in class?
  • Were you clear about the meaning of the questions? List the numbers of those questions about which you were unclear.
  • Which questions challenged you to think and why?
  • How much time did you spend studying for the test?
  • Will you spend more or less time studying for the next test? Why?
  • What grade do you expect on this test?

A word of caution, only ask questions about things you are willing to consider addressing. Also, compile the results and "close the loop" by sharing appropriate information with your students such as, how long most students studied, what questions they found challenging, etc.
