Session
1. Introduction to Quality Management
This workshop
will provide a basic introduction to the underlying philosophy,
psychology, concepts, terminology, tools, and organizational and
leadership approaches associated with quality management. The
instructor will introduce the components of Dr. W. Edwards
Deming's 'system of profound knowledge” which forms the basis
for the whole Academy. In addition you will have an opportunity
to participate in Deming's Red Bead Experiment.
Session 2.
Applying Systems Thinking to Your Business
In the
increasingly complex and interdependent worlds of work and
society, the understanding of a system has moved beyond being
simply a useful area of knowledge. For managers and others
working on change aimed at improvement — developing an
understanding of systems is absolutely essential. This session
will involve you in discussions and hands-on activities to
increase your understanding of systems in business and life.
Session
3.
Listening to & Utilizing the Voice of the Customer and
Understanding the Language of Variation
The morning
session is meant to promote a proactive approach to obtaining
and using feedback from your customer. You will see how quality
is defined by the customer’s needs —both spoken and unspoken.
In the afternoon, you will learn why an understanding of
variation is a key to creating long-lasting, effective
improvements in your business. Both parts of this workshop use
the “Fundamentals of Fourth Generation Management” video-based
education program from Joiner Associates as well as team-based
hands-on exercises and quality tools.
Session
4.
Generating Improvement Results with the PDSA Cycle, Quality
Tools and Measurement Planning
Using your
knowledge of variation, you will focus on an understanding of
the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Cycle and the steps for planning a
measurement process. You will learn how the Plan-Do-Study-Act
cycle can be used for continuous improvement in your business or
organization. PDSA can ensure that data collected will be
consistent and useful in making the most effective decisions.
You will learn when and how to use Quality Tools throughout the
PDSA improvement process, and put those tools into practice.
Session 5.
Restoration of the Individual: A Practical Approach to the
Psychology of Improvement and Change
Dr. Deming
believed (as noted in the Deming Dimension) that psychology
helps us to understand people: the interactions between people
and circumstances, interactions between teacher and pupil,
interactions between a leader and his or her people, and the
interactions in any system of management. Psychology also helps
us to understand and predict how uncertainty and variation in
circumstances affect people. Circumstances will affect people in
different ways. In this session we will examine the key concepts
and assumptions that impact our ability to generate improvement
and change.
