 Q: How to format a disk?

Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, > right-click on the 3 1/2" Floppy (A) On the context menu >click Format. In Format dialog box, >. Select "Start" to begin formatting.

 Q: How do I open a file on my disk?

  • Double-click My Computer, then double-click 3 1/2" Floppy (A:), and then double-click the file name. This will launch the application and then open your document.
  • Open the software application used to create the file. Then, click File, > Open on the Menu bar, > click the down arrow in the Look In, select 3 1/2" Floppy (A:), and then double-click on the file.

 Q: How do I save a file to my disk?

In the software program, Click File on the Menu bar, > Click the Save button. In the Save As dialog box, click the Save In down arrow, choose 3 1/2" Floppy (A:). In the File Name text box enter a descriptive file name, > then click Save.

 Q: How do I use Digital Drop Box?

Digital Drop Box is located within Blackboard. After you have logged into Blackboard, > to your class site, > click on Tools button, > and then click the Digital Drop Box link.

To save your document in to the Digital Drop Box, > click on the Add File button. In the Title box, name the file using the directions provided by your instructor. To locate the file to Add, > click on the Browse button. In the Browse dialog box, locate the file you saved. In the Comments text box, add your comments, if desired. When finished click the Submit button at the bottom of screen.

To Send a file to your instructor, click on Send File button. There are two options you can use to send a file. 1) If you have added the file to the Digital Drop Box, select the file from the drop down list.  2) To upload the file, use Browse button. In the Browse dialog box, locate the file you saved. In the Comments text box, add your comments, if desired. When finished click the Submit button at the bottom of screen.

 Q: Are there zip drives in the lab?

Yes, zip drives are on the computers in the Internet, Macs and Art/CAD machines.  If you are unsure of the location of these machines in the lab, please ask a staff person.

Q: How to find and open the Quick Basic?

After you have logged into the Network, > Double-Click My Computer, > Double-click the R: drive, > Double-click Courses, > Double-click the cisb114 folder. Double-click qbprogs, > double-click on the Qbasic.exe file.

 Q. Why I cannot open .wps file in the lab?

Files created in Microsoft Works need to be saved in rich text format (.RTF) on the computer they are created to make them compatible with the computers in the TLC Computer Lab. Microsoft Works is not installed on any pc in any lab or classroom.

 Q. How can I open my MSWorks files?

Microsoft Office has a Batch Conversion Wizard to assist you in converting Works files for use in Microsoft Word. To access the Wizard, Start Word Application > Click File > New, Click the Other Documents Tab from the list on your right of screen > Double-clicking the Batch Conversion Wizard steps you through the conversion process of your documents.

 Q: How to create a flow chat in Word?

You can create a simple flow chart in Microsoft Word using the drawing tools. To access the Drawing Toolbar, click on View, > Toolbars, > Drawing.  Then, use the a ellipsis or rectangle tools to draw shapes. You can use the arrow tool to indicate direction of processing.

 Q: How do I print my VB project code?

In the Visual Studio program, Click on File, > click Print. In the Print dialog, > click Current Project and Code, or Form.

 Q: How can I remove a virus on my floppy disk?

A: Double-click My computer > Right click on A: drive, > Select Scan for Viruses. When the McAfee dialog box appears select the options needed, and then click on Scan Now.

Q: Why doesn't the computer read my floppy disk?

When you experience problems reading from drive A: please ask a lab technician for assistance.

Q: What should I do if my computer freezes?

To keep data from being damaged or lost, please ask one of the lab staff for assistance.

Q: What are the black computers with 19" monitors for?

These workstations provide support to students enrolled in Art/CAD classes. These computers do not print in the lab. They have been re-directed to print elsewhere on campus.

 Q: What do I do if I am locked out of CTM (Course Test Manager)?

Type in your user name and password and then press Alt-O.

Q: Can I convert Office old versions' documents to Office XP and vice-versa?

Older versions of Office are compatible with Office XP with the exception of Access. However, if you create a file in Office XP in the lab and want to open it in older versions on your home computer, you will need to save it as a rich text format .RTF for Office older versions to open it and vice-versa.

Q: What do these red and green lines under what I have written in MSWord mean?

The red wavy lines indicate a spelling error and the green wavy lines indicate a grammar error.

 Q: What are the devices that look like a mouse pad? (Computers by the windows)

They are drawing tablets used in the computer graphics classes. They should not be used like a mouse pad as they are very sensitive and can be damage very easily.
