Keynote: Brenda Cartwright BS, MS, CODA, is an experienced interpreter, teacher and presenter. Ms Cartwright has been the Director of the Sign Language Interpreter Program at Lansing Community College for almost 30 years. Before that she was a teacher and coach at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis Indiana. She has written a number of textbooks that are widely used throughout the country. In her leisure time Ms Cartwright enjoys Triathlon training, eating carbohydrates and taking naps.
The Lansing Community College Interpreter Training Program: a program rooted in motivation, commitment, and desire. LCC's ITP has a 30-year history of producting qualified interpreters, and a repution for raising the bar year after year. Thanks to the support of Deaf and hearing partners all over Michigan and the U.S., our program has a unique teaching methodology and strong community element that allows students to put content and theory into practice.
Our training leverages language skills with ethical and cultural approaches that are the hallmark of quality communication. That is what we strive for with the Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and hearing communities, and what we appreciate as an opportunity to improve our service for years to come.

Entertainment: I'm Deaf. Sean Forbes is a ground-breaking, one-of-a-kind talent; a hip-hop artist who happens to be deaf, he was born and raised in the Detroit area, and has been influenced by Detroit musicians from an early age.

30 Years of History: Mary Klein will be sharing photos, drawings, artwork and stories about the history of our program from her perspective over the last 30 years.
10 Years of EIPA Results: The state of Michigan's EIPA requirement for working in K12 environments has caused an uptick in usage of this assessment. Through data collection of Michigan interpreters taking the EIPA, we can see the areas which interpreters understand and outperform minimums, and areas which interpreters fail to understand and therefore underperform minimums. We will spend time discussing the various skills judged by the EIPA panel, with an eye toward both first time test takers and interpreters returning to improve their scores.
Presentation: Lindsey Williams is an interpreter, adjunct faculty member, and the Practicum Supervisor for LCC’s Sign Language Interpreter Program. She currently holds BEI 1, EIPA 4.2, and RID Ed:K-12 certifications. She has a bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in multimedia and graphic design, and an associates degree from Lansing Community College in Sign Language Interpretation. She works as a freelance community interpreter and a video interpreter for Sorenson Communications. She revised the ITP Practicum to include ethics training and business skill development, and helped facilitate improvements to the Mentorship Program in the Sign Language Club. She writes grant proposals, being awarded over $150,000 for the SIGN Program in the last six years. In her free time she enjoys being an auntie, reading, travel, and those groovy adult coloring books.
The Practicum and Mentoring: How does an ITP manage its Practicum program? The LCC Practicum program has adapted from way back Then to Now in the face of changing state standards and interprereter requirements. This lecture will aim to describe the changes the LCC ITP has undergone, including a special look at the mentoring program developed in house to assist student transition through the program.
