Frequently Asked Questions About Student Employment
What is student
employment?
Student employment is offered on a
temporary, part-time basis to students who maintain at least
half-time enrollment (full-time enrollment for qualified
international students) at Lansing Community College. It is "at
will" employment which means the employee is not under contract,
is only hired for an indefinite period of time and can be
dismissed at any time for any non-discriminatory reason.
What are the eligibility
requirements for on-campus student employment?
To be eligible
for student employment, students must meet the following criteria:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age or a high
school graduate
-
Must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) and card
-
Must be eligible to work in the United States
of America (i.e. U.S. citizen, resident alien, refugee, political asylee)
or enrolled full-time as an international student (i.e. non-resident
alien) with an F-1 visa and a valid I-20 issued by Lansing Community
College
-
Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of
2.0 (requirement does not apply while enrolled in your first semester at
LCC)
-
Enrolled for at least 6 credits (taken on
either a numerical grade or pass/fail basis) in Fall and/or Spring
Semesters; 3 credits in Summer Session. International student with an F-1
visa enrolled for at least 12 credits in Fall and/or Spring Semesters; 3
credits for grade in Summer (same grade rules apply for all
semesters/sessions). Audited courses and incompletes (“I” grades that
carryover from previous semester/s) do not apply toward employment
eligibility. International students who claim exemption from the minimum
enrollment requirements (outlined above) must obtain an approved visa
exception from their international student counselor on a per semester
basis.
What is Work Study and how do I know if I am eligible
to participate in the Work Study Program?
Both the Federal Work Study and the
Michigan Work Study Program provide access to student employment
opportunities -- both on and off-campus. Students may be
eligible for either the federal or state Work Study award, by
indicating their interest on the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) -- available through the
Financial Aid
Department in Enrollment Services. The Work Study award is
actually a "maximum eligibility amount" that the student may
earn up to, if they secure a qualified student employment
position. The award amount will appear on the Financial Aid
Award Notification (issued to the student upon completing the FAFSA), if the student qualifies. The award is then paid-out, to
the student, in the form of wages. These Work Study "earnings"
may be used to assist with various education-related expenses.
Once the student attains their maximum eligibility amount
(through gross earnings), employment may be terminated; it is
considered to be temporary, part-time employment only.
Student employment is based upon skills and abilities -- not
necessarily financial need. Therefore, Work Study-eligible
students are not guaranteed a job. However, Work
Study-eligibility does provide unique opportunities for either
on-campus student employment offered by the College or for
off-campus Work Study employment offered by qualified non-profit
organizations and/or local/state/federal public agencies.
Contact Center for Employment Services to explore what
opportunities are available. CES also provides both on- and
off-campus employment opportunities to students who have not
received a Work Study award, regardless of financial need.
What is the rate of pay for student
employment/Work Study positions?
-
The rate of pay for all on-campus student
employment positions is $7.70 /hour.
-
The rate of pay varies for off-campus Work-Study
positions, depending on the employer.
-
The rate of pay for the America
Reads tutoring program is $8.10 /hour.
How do I apply for student employment
positions?
There are a variety of both on-campus and
off-campus Work Study positions available to eligible LCC students.
Students should check job listings weekly at Center for Employment Services or through our
web-based job posting system,
CES JobLink.
On-Campus
Student Employment: Both
Work Study and Non-Work Study eligible students may apply for on-campus
positions. Students must first register on
CES JobLink and complete the Student Employment Application,
then apply for positions on-line. Off-Campus Work Study: Only
Work Study eligible students may apply for off-campus Work
Study positions. In order to access posted off-campus Work Study
(WS) positions and officially secure WS employment, Center for Employment
Services (CES) must first verify your WS eligibility status for the
current financial aid year. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, CES
issues an assignment sheet for each position requested. Each assignment
sheet provides relevant employer information such as: the contact person's
name, phone number and mailing address. Each assignment sheet is valid for
a maximum of 2 weeks from the date it is issued to the student. Therefore,
it is important to contact the employer, in a timely manner, and complete
any additional application forms and/or arrange a meeting/interview for
the specified position. The student must take the assignment sheet to the
employer, during the initial meeting. The assignment sheet verifies to the
employer: that the student has WS eligibility, the eligibility (award)
amount and the date the student's WS eligibility expires. The employer
will then determine whether or not to hire the student for the specified
position.
