Office Systems Program Service Learning

The Office Systems Service Learning program is part of a capstone course, which is the last course students take before completing the requirements of their associates degree in Office Administration.  Service-learning is a teaching method that integrates community service with academic study.  The activities students engage in reinforce understanding of course topics and promote program goals.  Students have the opportunity to interact with organizational personnel and understand the importance of the various roles of an organization.  Furthermore, the student can contribute to society and learn to understand civic responsibilities and contemporary social issues, such as diversity.  Additionally, service-learning builds self-confidence and self-esteem, develops leadership skills, enhances teamwork abilities, fosters ethics and social responsibility, and helps students develop social and personal skills.  Organizations that wish to mentor an Office Systems student for a service learning activity should contact the Service Learning Coordinator, Pamela Miller, at 483-1593 or millerp8@lcc.edu

As part of its service learning program, LCC will provide an Office Systems faculty member who will be responsible for facilitating and evaluating the service learning experience.  The faculty member will serve as the primary communication link between the community partner and LCC.  Students will engage in 15-30 hours of service activities that will have direct contact with the community partner and/or its clients.  The student will expect no remuneration for his/her educational experiences.  The community partner will provide orientation to the student and a resource person (mentor/supervisor) who will assist the LCC faculty member in guiding the student?s learning experience and will participate in evaluating the student?s performance.  The community partner will have the right to terminate any student who is not participating satisfactorily or safely in this placement.
