With every year of junior college coaching comes new and unique challenges, and this year is certainly no different. I talked to Michigan States basketball coach Tom Izzo about the difficulties of having our players for only two years, he looked me right in the eyes and without hesitation said yes, I know what you mean. His statement puts things in proper prospective, regardless of your predicament... There are always plus and minuses to any situation. His program is so good that it is hard for him to keep future NBA players for the full four years of college. I guess the NIKE slogan "Just Do it" applies to all coaches and programs, so once again we will try and "Just Do It". This year we have a complementary blend of talented freshmen, to go along with our sophomores. I hope through hard work, smart play, and great effort, playing on those disciplines will get us back to the College World Series. We would like another chance to improve on last years 3rd place finish. I beleive my freshman this year are better then the freshmen of last season and that is a good thing. Most often it comes down to the team who has the best pitching that makes the deepest run at the end of the season. We lost two All-American pitchers to graduation, that hurts, but I feel I have the pitchers who can contribute and make our team one that certainly has to be respected in our league. With 11 sophomores and 6 freshman the blend to success has much more potential if the sophomores lead, and the freshmen learn quickly... That's what we'll work for each and everyday of practice. With no less than 7 freshmen in our line up for any one game we played last year, our team hit 90 Homers; I feel we have the capability of hitting the ball just as effectively again this year. The defense looks solid from top to bottom, and if I don't do anything to screw things up, I believe we will be right in the thick of things at the end. I really enjoy challenges of my job, and I certainly appreciate the opportunity of working with such great kids on a daily basis. |

- Assistant Coach -Name:Jerry Murphy |
Jerry Murphy begins his 6th year as assistant softball coach at Lansing Community College...The energy and enthusiasm that he brings to the team is one of the reasons the Stars have been one of the top softball programs in the country. Coach Murphy cut his teeth on fast pitch softball at an early age when he started pitching for his church team. Since then he has played on many teams in the mid-Michigan area... A time span covering nearly 45 years. As a former pitcher he learned at an early age the disciplines and dedication it takes to be the best... He employs that philosophy as a coach when teaching his players. Coach Every says, "Jerry will take on any task, from building a player's confidence to maintaining the field. He is the type of person who jumps right in and gets the job done no matter how simple or difficult it may be. He is a valuable part of this team and we are lucky to have him". |

- Assistant Coach -Name:Robert Dunham |
Robert Dunham begins his 4th year as the Stars pitching coach. The native of West Covina, California believes this could be one of Lansing's most talented pitching staff ever. The Stars who finished with 48 and 6 record last year and a trip to the College World Series placed players in many of colleges top pitching categories. Dunham, who attended Mt. San Antonio Junior College where he played baseball and football, later accepted a scholarship to Southern Oregon State University. After college, Coach Dunham returned to West Covina and began coaching softball at his old high school. He guided his girls softball team to three Southern Sectional playoffs in the very competitive CIF Region. Robert also coached a California's Gold travel team that saw three of his former players go on to play for team USA and another two dozen other players accepting Division I scholarships. Coach Every is quick to point out that "Robert's hard work is a huge reason why we were able to make it back to the College World Series after a two year absence. His work ethic and determination is un-matched by any pitching coach I have ever had... He has a passion for the sport and the kids who play it; and he is a Work Horse". Coach Dunham says, "I am enjoying working with such a talented pitching staff. The group is so diverse, and yet they seem to compliment each other in so many ways. I have no illusions that the road will be long and tough, but I believe if this team continues to work hard, they could be as talented as any team in the junior college ranks. One thing is for sure; I look forward to helping these talented girls get better, and I welcome the challenge of achieving the ultimate goal". |

- Assistant Coach -Name:Pat Malloy |
Pat Malloy is in his 3rd year as an assistant coach at Lansing Community College (LCC). After being around the sport of fast-pitch softball from an early age, he can continue his love of the game through his involvement at LCC. "To this day, some of my best friends were team mates,. and I have great memories of the times we shared playing softball. This coaching staff is no different. I consider them to all be very close friends, and I enjoy spending time with them on and off the field. I'm truly blessed to be here with these guys, and I thank LCC for this opportunity." Pat's playing days ended when his daughters started playing ball. He started coaching Grand Ledge youth Softball, followed by travel teams, and then four years at the high school level. He considers LCC to be one of a handful of premiere junior college programs in the country. Reviewing the pas accomplishments of head coach Bob Every's teams, and with the addition of the new dugouts and press box at the Star's home field, Ranney Park, the whole program is truly impressive. One of Pat's greatest memories was assisting last year's team as they traveled to the college world series. "Watching the girls perform at the highest level o competition was a great thrill for me. The friendships they all forged, and the competition they fought through will always be a fond memory." The coaching staff is starting a new year working with the returning sophomores and new freshmen in hopes that they will work hard in the class room and on the field to see that LCC softball remains one of the premier programs in the country. |
