Andy Merchant begins his first year as Head Baseball Coach of LCC after serving as an assistant last year at Olivet College. Merchant is from Dimondale, MI and attended Holt High School, where he had a successful playing career as a pitcher and outfielder. He attended Alma College where he graduated in 2000, with a degree in Business Administration. While at Alma College, Merchant was a key contributor on the 1999 MIAA Championship team and pitched in many big games in his four years.
Coach Merchant founded Kitsmiller RV Baseball Club and coached them over three successful years in the Lansing Men’s Wooden Bat League. His Kitsmiller teams made postseason play each year and consisted of many of the top collegiate players in mid-Michigan.
Merchant has had an extensive playing career beginning at Holt, then continuing with East Lansing Post 205, Alma College, and over 15 years in the Lansing Men’s City Leagues. He also played several years for the Fulton Sultans in the Gratiot County League and two years for Los Banditos of the Detroit Mexican League.
Coach Merchant is currently employed as a baseball instructor and youth baseball travel league coach for Grand Slam Baseball Academy at Court One Athletic Clubs. He also spent time in his years after college assisting with the Holt High School baseball program.
Merchant currently resides in Dewitt, with his wife Megan and son Eli.
Assistant Coach: Billy Salazar
BJ Salazar joins the Stars coaching staff after a four-year playing career at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. He graduated in May of 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management. During his playing career, Salazar spent most of the time in the middle infield and also played some outfield.
Salazar is a Lansing native and a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School. BJ played summer ball for 4 years on East Lansing Post 205 and helped lead them twice to the Palomino World Series in California. He will be working with the infielders and hitters while assisting with recruiting.
Assistant Coach: Ron Murdock
Ron Murdock begins his 1st season with LCC baseball, bringing with him over 40 years of baseball coaching experience. Ron began his coaching career in 1971 with Fulton of the Gratiot County League and remains the Head Coach of his Sultans men’s team. His Sultans have played in many semi-pro and amateur tournaments throughout the state over his 43 years and Murdock has coached eight players that have gone on to play baseball professionally.
Murdock is the Vice President of the Gratiot County League, a position he has held for the past 19 years. He founded an 18u youth wooden bat league in Gratiot County and coached a Fulton team, the league and his team was in existence for seven years.
For the past three years, Murdock has coached the 18u Saint John’s High School summer league team, as well as their wood bat league fall ball team.
Ron is a native of Perrinton, MI and currently resides in Middleton.
