Advising and Counseling Center

Academic Advising Center

Definition of Academic Advising:

Academic advising is the process whereby advisors and students work together to attain student educational and life goals. Through frequent communication and collaboration, initiated by both student and advisor, students will realize their maximum education potential. Consequently, the advisor serves as a facilitator of communication, a coordinator of learning experiences, and an agent of referral to other campus departments and services.

What To Expect From an Advising Appointment

Among many things, you can expect an Academic Advisor to provide information regarding academic planning, assist with curriculum interpretation, and answer transfer questions, including issues regarding MACRAO and the Integrative Studies Requirement at MSU. An Academic Advisor will also be able to discuss the components of the Selective Admissions process with students. For more information on the MACRAO and General Education Core, check out these helpful PowerPoint Presentations:

Educational Development Plan (EDP)

An Educational Development Plan—EDP, for short—is an individualized semester-by-semester class plan for reaching the student’s intended educational goal.  With this plan, the student can map out a path to a certificate, degree, or career goal and set a timeline for attaining it.  It is a plan that will be influenced by classes offered each semester and the student’s individual circumstances, so the student and program advisor should re-evaluate it regularly.

How To Plan For Your Appointment

Please arrive at your academic advising appointment prepared. Spend some time thinking about what you want out of your appointment. Have a copy of your curriculum with you and any preparation work you may have done. If you have credits from LCC's Counseling and Advising Centeranother college, bringing a copy of your transcript would be very effective.

In general, any information pertinent to your academic goals would help in making your advising experience a positive one.
