Dr. Brent Knight became the sixth president of Lansing Community College on July
1, 2008. He is known for managing diverse student bodies, building strong
relationships with college communities, boards and faculty, and championing
responsible fiscal management.
President Knight's extensive background with various educational institutions,
coupled with his experience with an investment firm and a large regional retail
chain, brings a unique blend of expertise to Lansing Community College. He honed
his collaborative skills at several educational institutions serving as
president of Morton College in Cicero, Illinois., Pierce College in Tacoma,
Washington. and Triton College in River Grove, Illinois.
In his most recent position as president of Morton College, Knight developed and
employed a new strategic plan to align the college with the community that it
serves. Under Knight's leadership, the percentage of Latino staff significantly
rose to more than 50 percent, reflecting Morton's student body of more than 70
percent Latino students. He also developed strong relationships with the board,
faculty and other key stakeholders at Morton College.
Knight was an officer and vice president of development at Meijer, Inc., a
regional retail chain, from 1989 to 1996. Following Meijer, Knight served as
president of Investment Resources Co., a privately held investment firm that
invests in emerging companies.
In addition to his extensive professional background, Knight has served the
community as Chairman of Fredrick Meijer Garden (then Michigan Botanical Garden)
in Grand Rapids, Michigan. and as a board member of a hospital and a public
school district in Illinois.
Knight earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ferris State
University, a master of arts degree in business and community college teaching
from Western Michigan University (WMU) and a doctorate of education in
educational leadership from WMU before becoming a visiting scholar of strategic
planning at the University of Michigan.
